A friend of mine has a bad chronic cough and has had for months now. She has been on 1 round of antibiotics, had inhalers for the wheezing, and breathing treatment.......nothing seems to be helping. I think she is afraid that it could be something bad. She is in her late 50's.

It is best if she continues to see the doctor for help. It can be so many things, many of which with the right care can be controlled.
I was born with a lung disease, but with the right care I can live a good life.

If it's just coughing she could have reflux on one end or post-nasal drip on the other. Or if she's a serious drinker, her liver could be swollen and pressing on her diaphragm. But if wheezing is part of it, she may have asthma, or she may have poisoned herself by doing craft work with bad stuff like MDF or strong glue, or she could have mold in her house.

Yes, it could be something more serious but it could be something easily corrected with medication. Advise her to go BACK to her doctor so he/she can evaluate it. It could be as serious as lung cancer or as harmless as a sinus drip. The thing is, not knowing isn't going to change a thing, and WILL make a serious situation worse!
Advise her. That's all you can do. The decision is hers, good or bad.

I heard on tv that taking an anti-histamine can help in that it dries up the stuff that is draining into the throat and causing the cough.

Otherwise please encourage her to see a doctor.

I'm not a doctor, but it be that your freind might very well have a sinus problem. Have them see a ENT to check the sinus areas.
