Not usually, they usually do that AFTER you are diagnosed. Diabetes can be dx'd with a blood test, but once you have it, they want to check your urine for protein, since diabetics often have kidney issues.

If this is simply a routine full blood work-up, they will simply sample some of the blood for a sugar detection. If your doc has reason to believe that you are "trending" toward true diabetes, you will be getting what is called a "glucose tolence test". In this test, you will be fasting overnight, then they draw you blood, they give you a sucrose drink, and you must wait there and they draw blood in 1 and 2 hour increments. The glucose tolerence test is the deciding factor whether you do or do not have diabetes.

Urinalysis is better than urine test for sugar. You should also conduct Glycosylated hemoglobin (HbA1c) test every 4 months. Similarly eye test (retinopathy), dental examination, microalbuminuria test for kidney, SGPT(ALT) & SGOT(AST) tests for liver, ECG & TMT Test for heart, etc should be done periodically.
