Please read the following for your answer...
Effects of various factors on heart rate:
Ions: When Na+ levels are high, these ions block calcium inflow during
cardiac action potentials, decreasing the force of contraction.
Excess K+ blocks generation of action potentials (elevated K+ can
stop the heart—this can happen when the kidneys malfunction and
don’t secrete excess K+—it causes a slowing of the heart rate, and the
heart will eventually stop if the condition—hyperkalemia—isn’t
treated. A moderate increase in calcium will speed up and stregthen
heart rate.
Hormones: epinephrine and norepinephrine (from adrenal medulla) will
increase the heart’s pumping efficiency. They increase the contrac-
tility and heart rate of heart muscle contractions. Exercise, stress,
excitement cause the adrenal medulla to release more hormone.
Thyroid hormones can also enhance heart rate and contractility.
Hyperthyroid can produce rapid heart rate (tachycardia).
Heart rate by age: Babies are likely to have over 120 bpm. Females generally have a slightly higher rate than males. A physically fit person may have a resting heart rate of 60 bpm or less. (An average value is 70 bpm).
Illness with fever will cause the SA node to discharge impulses faster and
increase heart rate. Hypothermia will lower heart rate.
Nervous system control of heart is from the medulla oblongata. The cardi-
ovascular center provides appopriate output via both the sympa-
thetic / parasympathetic branches of the ANS.
Sympathetic—increases heart rate
Parasympathetic—decreases heart rate via the vagus nerve.
Congestive heart failure—the heart is failing as a pump. Often one side
begins to go before the other. If the left ventricle can’t pump effi-
ciently, blood begins to back up in the lungs—this is pulmonary
edema. If the right ventricle begins to fail first, fluid builds up in
peripheral tissues, and is seen in edema of feet and ankles most
noticeably.
O2 Levels: in systemic circulation, blood vessels dilate when oxygen levels are
low; in pulmonary circulation, vessels constrict in low oxygen levels. This
allows blood to be diverted to areas of the lung that are better ventilated
(have a better supply of oxygen).
Hope this will solve some of your queries.

Heart palpitations can be caused by:
Exercise
Anxiety, stress, fear
Fever
Caffeine, nicotine, cocaine, diet pills
Overactive thyroid
Anemia
Hyperventilation
Low levels of oxygen in your blood
Medications such as thyroid pills, asthma drugs, beta blockers for high blood pressure or heart disease, or anti-arrhythmics (medications to treat an irregular heart rhythm can sometimes cause a different irregular rhythm)
Mitral valve prolapse -- the valve that separates the left upper chamber (atrium) from the left lower chamber (ventricle) of the heart does not close properly
Heart disease
