My sister has acute severe pancreatitis. She is 28 years old with 3 kids. She has this severe illness and she has went from 200lbs to 108lbs in the last 4 months. She has asked me to find out how she can gain weight without running up her sugar. Everytime I try to look something up, I always find what I am NOT looking for (how to lose weight or bodybuilders). I really need some help in order to help my sister. And yes, she has asked her doctor and all he tells her is to eat lots of candy bars and starches but that runs her sugar up.

Gaining weight requires consuming more calories than you are using. The choice of foods to do this are endless. They don't have to be sugary. They can be high protein and high fat (preferably the good fats - poly's and mono's). The bottom line is consuming more calories!!

I am assuming she monitors her blood sugar a few times a day but you do not say if she is on medication for diabetes or if she takes injections.

I am not on any medication or injections and I monitor mine with diet and blood testing.

She can eat a lot more meat. She can take those drinks called Glucerna they are made for diabetics

and put her on a really good prenatal vitamin (they are the best). Starches and sweets are not the way to go if she is diabetic. She can eat a little bit more fats but not much.

She can have limited servings of whole grain breads and pastas made from whole wheat. She can eat fruits also and avocado is full of calories and okay for diabetics.

I am really shocked her doctor would tell her to eat candy bars.

I think I would go the protein route. Protein will not turn into sugar obviously, so won't affect the level of her sugar but can definitely pack on pounds. Eggs, chicken, fish, bacon, sausage, beef, pork...Ok, it sounds like doing the atkins diet, but she should eat whever normal amount of carbs she can tolerate as well.
Not sure how this would affect the pancreas, though, so she'd have to ask her doctor (although from the sounds of things, he's not too bright about the whole diet thing telling her to eat loads of candy when *i assume* she is diabetic!...)
