Lacto is a term used for milk or dairy, so a lacto-vegetarian will still eat things that contain dairy products.
Ovo is the term for eggs, so a person who is ovo-vegetarian will still eat things that have eggs in it.
A lacto-ovo vegetarian eats things that have both eggs and dairy.

An egg is not vegetarian. That's why those that consume dairy and eggs are lacto-ovo, thus a "qualifier". Let's rationalize this for a minute....the Random House Webster dictionary says a vegetarian is someone who doesn't eat "...meat, fish or fowl, or, in some cases, any food derived from animals." A vegan is " a vegetarian that omits all animal products from the diet". An egg is made by a chicken and an animal product. Not sounding too good for the egg-vegetarian theory....

An egg cannot be a vegetarian food because it comes from chicken. Any vegetarian who tells you egg is ok is only a partial vegan finding an easy way out. Either you're a vegan or not. The person can't be both. I find those vegetarians fools because they don't really have any grounding on their choice of eating lifestyle. Ah well!

It depends. Lacto-ovo and ovo vegetarians are allowed to eat eggs but not eat meat. A hen will still lay an egg regardless of whether it has been fertilized or not, so it is ok to eat an egg if you know no fertilization has occurred. Vegans aren't allowed to eat any animal products.

Of course, fertilization wouldn't occur because most egg laying hens are segregated from the roosters for production purposes...But if you are concerned about hens living in battery cage conditions, don't buy those eggs then.

You can use egg replacers or crushed flax seed as a binding agent in cakes and other recipes.

Eggs are part of a vegetarian diet. They may be called ovo vegetarians. I'm not sure about the proper name. I know there are vegans. They eat only raw vegetables. There is a third group of vegetarians who eats another group of foods. However, I have forgotten the details of that group. Hope this helps.

Eggs are a vegetarian food. Vegans don't eat any animal products whatsoever, so they do not eat eggs. An ovo-vegetarian will eat eggs (ovo=egg). A lacto-vegetarian will eat dairy (lacto=milk). There are words for vegetarians who eat chicken (pollo, I think?) and fish (pesche, I think?), but in my opinion, they aren't really vegetarians since a living creature has to die so you can eat. But opinions are a dime a dozen.

There are about 5 different classifications of vegetarians.

And to all of those vegans and vegetarians out there that think free-range chickens live a better life, think again. All free range means in the industry is that a little tiny door is left open for the birds to step outside and walk around in a very small cage or pen. Most don't even notice the door or they stick with the rest of the crowd. And THEN you are charged more because it has "free-range" stamped on it. Sorry.

I think there are two classes of vegetarians. There are those who don't eat meat but will have animal products - milk, eggs, chese etc The strict vege will touch no animal products at all. I am a part time, liberal vegetarian.

it isn't a vegetable
but it isn't really an animal either; just a cluster of protein that will not become meat like an earlier poster said, because the eggs you eat are not fertilized

the caf at my school serves eggs as vegetarian food.

A better question is do you think an egg is vegetarian? Strictly speaking,
anything to do with an animal is not vegetarian. If you want to be a strict
vegetarian then you do not eat eggs, cheese, milk, yogurt, chocolate, or
anything containing these items. I think you can go easy on yourself and
make up your own mind what it is you are uncomfortable eating. There
are no veggie police.
