Metformin has worked wonders for me, but if you want something different, the best way is exercise, eating frequent, small meals (I eat 6 little meals a day instead of three big ones (this keeps your sugar levels at a more steady rate instead of big peaks and valleys), and change what you eat. ( I am a chef, if you want some ideas on what to eat, or where to find ideas, let me know)
Also, Splenda is a marvelous thing. Sweet, without the sugar, and , most importantly, without the nasty aftertaste.
Snacks? Sugar free jello. Cures your sweet tooth, yet no carbs, no fat, no nothing.

Several different things to do with treating Diabetes. Depends on your situation and how bad the sugar is and whether you are still producing insulin.

I found out 5 yrs ago...I thought it was stress while buying a house that made me lose 22 pounds during the Christmas holiday...my blood sugar was 250+, and is now down to 100-120 most of the time.

Usually they give you metformin, depends also on your A1c level as far as how much you take a day. If you're overweight they'll tell you to lose some, avoid simple sugars and cut the carbs, get exercise and test yourself regularly. I was also placed on a blood pressure med and one for cholesterol at the same time (it's the usual practice around this area).

We also have in this area the Strelitz (sp?) Institute for Diabetes, part of Eastern Va. Medical School, the same group that had as part of it the Jones Institute, responsible for the first test-tube baby in the US. They say they're on the verge of finding a cure.

Here in the US a fasting of 7.0 or 126 here, is the starting point for diabetes diagnosis. You just slid in there at the bottom. You just crossed over into the diabetic range. Hopefully you made lifestyle changes, diet, weight loss, exercise, and that has kept your diabetes from progressing. Don't be fooled though. I don't know where you live or what the criteria is or has been in regards to diagnosising diabetes, but the guidelines for glucose levels were lowered not too long ago here because studies have shown that long before diabetes is diagnosed damage is already being done. Don't let the meter fool you, you're still diabetic and you should be thankful it hasn't progressed over the last 4 years! You're doing something right!!!

Read the book, "Diabetes Solutions Revised and Updated" by Richard Bernstein, M.D. Dr. Bernstein's book saved my husbands life! It should be MUST reading for every diabetic.
Dr. Bernstein was an engineer - he has Type I Diabetes. He approached the illness with the mind-set of an engineer and discovered how to control his blood sugar, cholesterol, blood pressure, etc. The doctors wouldn't listen to him, so at the age of 45 years old, he went back to school and became a doctor! He is a practicing diabetologist in Marmomeck Lake, NY.

Get the book! It will be life-changing for you!

Nopolitos boiled for 15 minutes drink one cup in the morning and one in the evening. It is slimy tastes like cr-ap but it works.
To the retard that says homeopathy will not work does not have a clue nor knowledge to speak for herself or anyone else.
I was on 75 units of insulin twice daily and under constant doctors care and I had trouble maintaining a blood sugar below 150.
Today I am doctor free eat healthy and maintain a level below 150.
Nopolitos are young prickly pear leaves without the thorns. 3 small leaves cut up and boiled for 15 minutes .cool and drink.

Treatment
Controlling your blood sugar is essential to feeling healthy and avoiding long-term complications of type 2 diabetes. Some people are able to control their blood sugar with diet and exercise alone. Others may need to take medications, in addition to making lifestyle changes. In either case, monitoring your blood sugar is a key part of your treatment program.

I've put together a number of things that will help in addition to keeping your weight down, healthy diet, and plenty of exercise. For example, did you know cinnamon not only helps your insulin do its job better, but also reduces triglycerides and cholesterol? No, I'm not making this up. This comes from the USDA website. I control my condition ( age 64) with Glucophase, and Glucotrol pills.
Of course there is a diet :
No alcohol,
No sugar or any kind of cake with sugar.
And small frequent meals.
Exercise is very important but I do not do any special one other than working ....

The level you describe is not so bad and can be managed.

You usually treat type 2 diabetes with a strict diet. Some people also take insulin.
