I've had it at Bubble Tea and I've read about it in books (apparently it's consumed in Afghanistan?), and I'd like to know how to make it (without the tapioca bubbles.)

Here are two recipes and the link is where I found them. My advice would be to get the loose leaf tea, not tea bags. The tea bags are the left overs and usually not of the best quality. (unless of course it is a high quality tea company) I like to add the sugar to the tea before the milk.

Milk Tea Recipes
Recipe #1: Make a tea concentrate by doubling the amount of black tea leaf and brew a mug, or a half or full pot of tea. Fill pre-heated mug 2/3 full of brewed tea, add hot milk, and sweeten. Full bodied teas, such as our Assam Blend, English Breakfast, Irish Breakfast or Africa Morning are ideal.

Recipe #2: Add 1 heaping teaspoon dry tea leaf to 1 cup boiling water in saucepan and simmer for 1- 2 min. Add a little less than one cup of milk to tea mixture. When milk comes to a boil, remove saucepan from stove immediately and strain the “milk tea” into your cup, mug, or pre-heated teapot. Sweeten heavily!

This is the south east asia's version of milk tea usually done by the indians. Boiling water poured over a tea bag, let it steep for 5 mins. stir a little, pour 5 teaspoons of sweeten milk (you can get it at the store, it comes in a can), stir for 1 minute (gotta stir long other it won't taste good, try it then you'll know what i mean).

Enjoy!

In that part of the world they do not brew plain tea in teapots and then add things to it .... they take one part tea and one part water, bring it to a boil, add loose tea leaves and some sugar and bring it to a boil once more... then
they like to "aerate' it by pouring from one tumbler to another.
Sometimes it is made with fresh ginger or a green cardamom pod.. or cardamom pod, 2-3 cloves, and a
cinnamon stick ...(India) In fact, the last mentioned is often
brewed in just milk, and is called "Doodh Chai"
