You can go to Cost Plus World Market, and in the food section, you can get garlic and black bean chili pastes. It may be called sambal, or if you can find it, there's a chili sauce called sriracha that has a green squirt lid and has a picture of a rooster on the bottle.

In the sauces aisle, look for:

Tuong ot-toi Viet Nam -- Vietnamese chile paste with garlic (a chunkier style, with seeds in the mix)

Tuong ot-toi Sriracha -- Vietnamese chile paste, Sriracha style (smoother, a little sweeter, no seeds)

Sambal oelek -- Indonesian chile paste with garlic (very similar to the first tuong)

Look in the sauces aisle, it should be near the soy, hoisin, etc. bottled sauces. The first style of tuong and the sambal are in cylindrical clear-plastic jars, usually with green lids; the Sriracha style tuong is in a squeeze bottle.

I've also had an Indonesian chile sauce/paste that was made of roasted red chiles in oil -- it's also excellent, but these three are my regular staples.

Try asking for "dragon teeth".
This is a chili paste preserved in oil that works great, and is the type found in my local asian restraunts and supermarkets.

well, it obviously depends on what kind of asian store you went to (chinese, korean...), but it's usually in the aisle with the soy sauce and rice vinegar etc.
