I know it is Mexican, and if I find the history I will edit it into this.

ETA: Found something that isn't great, but will at least give you a source to cite. "A sincronizada (Spanish for "synchronized") is a tortilla dish frequently confused with quesadillas by tourists. Sincronizadas usually have two ingredients, typically ham and cheese. Sincronizadas are made with flour tortillas and are the closest Mexican equivalent to what is typically called a quesadilla in most Mexican restaurants outside of Mexico."

"In Mexican cuisine, a tortilla-based sandwich frequently confused with quesadillas, due to its resemblance to "quesadillas" sold in the US (US quesadillas are usually made with tortillas rather than molded from masa in the Mexican style).

Sincronizadas (so called because the top and bottom tortilla are "synchronized" together) sandwich ingredients between two tortillas, which is then grilled. One of the ingredients is normally cheese, to stick the two tortillas together."
