She needs to get up an move around to help clear her lungs. If she lays in bed she will have a harder time getting rid of the pneumonia as she won't be expanding her lungs like she will if she is up and moving around. Let her do whatever she feels like doing. If you think she can cough on command encourage her to cough and breathe deeply several times a day to help expand her lungs. Whatever your daughter did before the pneumonia is fine so long as she is comfortable and doesn't get too warn down.

get her up in the chair for short periods in a well ventilated room but not in a draft
or the pneumonia will take longer to resolve
she also will develop bed sores from lying in bed even if you reposition her every 2 hours then you risk further problems of infection
her handicaps have nothing to do with it
she should sit up as long as she does not get over tired
i am assuming she has been seen by a physician had a chest xray and did not require hospitalization and
is on antibiotics if it is bacterial pneumonia
if it is viral pneumonia good nutrition hydration and rest is the treatment
if however she gets worse or develops a very high fever she may have developed a super imposed infection and require antibiotics
so monitor her temperature regularly

Your daughters medical background - as you must surely have been told - makes her vulnerable to respiratory problems.
With any breathing problem it is better for the patient to sit up - and to drink plenty of fluids.
However if your daughter feels able to watch and enjoy TV, I doubt very much that she has full-blown pneumonia...
But if she does develop fever and chills then clearly you must get a doctor - and a prescription for anti-biotics.

What does her doctor say? Sitting up usually helps someone to breath. What do you mean by "mildly"? I think sitting up should help a little but, I would keep her in bed.

Depending on the location of the pnuemonia. IE the lower posterior lobes, will affect her oyxgenation status. ( I'm a respiratory therapist). Optimally, deep breathing, percussion to the affected lobe, and lots of coughing will expedite her recovery. Unless she gets dizzy with position changes, bed rest is ill-advised.
