The bottom number (diastolic) is the pressure when your heart is resting (between beats). It's a measure of how flexible / hardened your arteries are.

The bottom number of a blood is called the diastolic pressure. while the top number is called the systolic pressure. The systolic pressure is always the top number and the diastolic pressure is always the bottom number. The systolic reading ( top #) measures pressures in the blood vessels in that split second the the heart is pumping out blood (aka; systolie) and the diastolic reading measures the pressures in the blood vessels when the heart is at rest (aka: diastolie). Both are important numbers as they show how hard the heart is working. The lower the pressure the less work it has to do to pump the blood through out the body. The higher the numbers the harder the heart has to work. m Then lower the numbers are the more dialated ( open )the blood vessels are. The higher the numbers the more constricted (smaller) they are. For example. You have 2 100gallon tanks full of water. 1 tank has a long tube about the size of a drinking straw coming out of it and the other has a tube about the size of a long garden hose coming out of it. Now you have to get both tanks of water to empty within 1min. Believe me, it will take alot more work to get the water with the drinking straw to all drain in the same amount of time that it takes for the water in the tank with the garden hose. That is why high blood pressures are one of the things that can cause heart attacks. They can also cause some types of cardiomyopathies (enlarged hearts). The blood pressure reading in your question is considered a stage 2 hypertention. Which means that any consistant B/P with a top number from 160-179 and a bottom number from 100-109 is considered a stage. The most important word in the above sentence is "consistant". Most experts consider any B/P consistantly above 140/90 hypertensive. You need to remember that your blood pressure is constantly changing within the body. If you had an arterial line in and were hooked up to a moniter ( this is done during surgery alot and in intensive care units). you wood see both the bottom and the top numbers changing all the time. When you have your B/P taken by a cuff , aka: manually your are just getting the reading @ that very moment. Hope this helps you with your question.

The bottom number (diastolic) is the pressure in your arteries when the heart is relaxed. That is why there is more concern when the diastolic is a high number than when the systolic (top number) is high. If your bottom number is high, your heart is never getting the relaxation pressures it needs. Too much work is being put on the heart, and it can cause the heart to be overworked and end up becoming exhausted. Damage can occur over a long period of time if this isn't fixed.

High pressures can also cause strokes, because the blood is not bringing enough oxygen around to the tissues and the brain is suffering from lack of oxygen.

HOPE THIS HELPS.

My husband went to the cardiologist today and his bottom number was higher than the top. He returns tomorrow for a stress test. When this happens it doesn't necessarily mean the blood pressure monitor is wrong but it certainly means something is wrong. The trip to the ER was the right and smart choice.

Blood pressure readings are measured by systolic/diastolic, in your case 160/102, systolic is the pressure when the heart beats, diastolic is the pressure when the heart is in between beats or resting.

Hopefully you are seeing a doctor. There are many reasons for elevated blood pressure.
