I have had this disease for over 30 years... it was a gift from my mom who has had it for 65+ years. The only complication that i recently have is weight gain.(due to taking insulin which is a protein for so long) This is not the worse disease to have. When I was first diagnosed the only sugar free item was TAB soda..... so i did stand out alot being "different"
Please go to the doctors with your grand child and learn as much as possible. If she eats 5 small meals a day... tests her blood 4 or more times, exercises, visits her dr. every 3 months.... she will live a long healthy life. Make sure she stays away from splenda items... this is a sugar. Eating right and exercising is not a curse... get the whole family to eat the diabetic diet.....and play together..... let her teach you how to test the blood...have her test your blood.. see who has the best #
There are support groups for parents and children..... talk to her dr about where and when..... so she won't feel so "different"
You are a great grand parent. I understand your worry... the main thing is to accept her.... go out for a s/f ice cream one night and talk to her about things... but keep an eye on her blood sugar levels... that is the most important...... You will be fine....

I was diagnosed at age 13. I did well taking care of myself until about age 18, then I went through a denial phase until about 25. I would always take my insulin injections, but I didn't test very often and I didn't go to the doctor, and I ate pretty much anything I wanted. I didn't have health insurance through part of that time, so that didn't help matters. I've been taking better care of myself since. When you are diabetic, it's something that is always on your mind. Luckily I haven't had any complications because of it. I am sorry to hear about your granddaughter. Learn as much as you can about the disease to be a support for her. Don't nag her and question every food choice she makes. We diabetics, including you granddaughter are very lucky to have the tools to manage our diabetes fairly well. It helps make our lives a little more "normal".

My wife has had diabetes for over 20 years. In ten years you will have serious health problems. The chance of getting diabetes is inherited. The good news is discipline .
1.A brisk walk for ten(or more) minutes every day will help more than any thing you can try , if you walk don't run you can utterly stop diabetes now.
2.Watch eating fats,starches and sugar.
3.Sugar burns off first then carbohydrate's so limit these .
4.Sugar runs your readings up higher but fat will hold readings up longer.

We started out when there was very little info. on diabetes .Infant diabetes is devastating but for only two reasons the ten years period happens earlier in life and children haven't developed much discipline.

Yours in Christ

Diabetic for 27 years. I found out that I had it at age 7.
You can go many years without complications if you follow your doctors instructions.
It is not easy, especially for a child or teen.
If you just ignore it, it will kill you slowly.
Good Luck.
