A hen is a female turkey, usually a little smaller than the male. A tom is the make turkey and is a little larger than the hen. That's all.

Hen is female, Tom is male. Beyond that, hens do tend to have more breast and white meat because they're bred that way. I'd look for an organic hen if you want more breast meat without the added hormones. Good luck!

A hen turkey is up to 16 pounds a tom turkey is 16.1 pounds and up. I just found this out when I was looking to buy one for this thanksgiving!!

the correct terms are hen obviously for the female and cock for the male, as regards quality the hen is much better because of the greater meat content in the breast, the cock has a much larger bone content especially in the breast area, for this reason you can usually buy cock birds much cheaper.for some "to me" obscure reason answers have delted the word c--k
