Outbreaks can happen at any time not only when you have intercourse.
Sometimes outbreaks can occur and not be noticed by the individual who has the condition - this is fine but it also means that you can infect another person and not be aware of it.

Herpes outbreaks happen most during stress. Women have their outbreaks right b4 their period, most the time, men have outbreaks once every 6 months or so. this is an estimate and an overall calculation. The virus comes with the HPV virus and many have it for years before they know. It can be transmitted without an outbreak because it is one of the strings from HPV. Genital Warts is also from the virus. Smoking can offset these faster. If you have HPV, it doesn't mean you have one of these strings, just take caution that there is a chance and use protection for others sake. These are VERY contagious.

I got clinically diagnosed with genital herpes (type 2) about three yrs ago, whilst I was still attending college and had a foolish one-night stand. I realize a lot of girls say this, but I swear I had never done that sort of thing before. I just made a massive mistake that one time and all of a sudden I felt like I was going to have to live with the implications for my entire life. The hardest part was feeling I could never date men again. After all, who wants to go out with someone who has sores round her "you know what" area? But since a friend shared this video https://tr.im/XPOVf everything improved.
Not only was I able to eliminate all remnants of the herpes simplex virus from my system in less than 21 days, but I was also able to start dating again. I even met the man of my dreams and I'm so blessed to write that just a week ago, in front of everyone in a busy restaurant, he got down on one knee and proposed to me!! This system provided me the chance to be happy and experience real love again. Now I want to help others too by sharing this story.

here, read this article.... it all depends upon the person...
Herpes infections have different patterns in different people. Any one or combination of the following factors might sometimes, not always, induce an outbreak: surgery, illness, stress, fatigue, skin irritation (such as sunburn), diet, menstruation, or vigorous sexual intercourse.
A recurrence of the herpes infection may occur when latent viruses are triggered by immunosuppressive events such as emotional stress, sunlight, menses, cold or fevers, certain foods, beverages, vitamins and medications.
Since the recurrence pattern of herpes is almost as varied as the people who harbor the virus, you should take every precaution possible to keep the virus in remission.
