It can paralyze the cillia which is tiny hair that line several areas in your body. The cillia moves back and forth filtering out dust and so forth.

The tar is not so good - it does tend to gum things up a bit, nicotine is a powerful drug - but other than its addictive nature, I am unaware of any harm that the compound itself causes.

Carbon monoxide IN QUANTITY is exceedingly toxic - but unless you chain-smoke several at a time, it is difficult to see how you could even get a dose high enough to cause a headache - far less anything more dangerous.

As always, so much hype and drama built up for scaremongering reasons.

Chocolate is most certainly fatal to humans - though thankfully the dose is in the order of MANY kilograms at a time - so in REALITY - it does no harm.

I'd be a bit unhappy about the tar, the nicotine and CO wouldn't personally worry me in the slightest.

** update **

Why are other posters commenting on the hazards of smoking in general ? - That was NOT the question.

Well, look at how many people die from lung cancer every year. Also, look how many non-smokers who get it from second hand smoke.
I'm an X smoker & I can't stand to be near cigs. Ten + years w/out lighting up! Almost as long as I smoked.
Unfortuanately it my grandmother dying from lung cancer to get me to quit.

if you smoke alot you wont have to worry about it in a while....the more you smoke the less time you have to ponder the question....you have to be living under a rock not to know smoking kills...wheres the grey area.
