This is really aimed towards those vegetarians and vegans who "care about animals" rather than those who don't eat meat for other reasons. I am a vegetarian and I had to let go of all those leather goods like Coach, Dooney & Bourke, Nine West, etc. If you're gonna do something for a cause, then COMMIT to that cause.

Congrats on your commitment to your cause. It is great to hear and see vegetarians/vegans that go all out. And you are very right that eating and wearing an animal is the same thing, and the animal is killed for both reasons.
I know several newbies at vegetarianism/veganism and they still wear their leather shoes because they are still good. They will buy new vegan ones when these go out. For envronmental reasons, this sounds plausible to me. Why throw something out and put more trash into the environment? At least they are aware of leather as an animal skin.
Maybe vegetarians/vegans need to be educated about all the stuff that goes on with animal products. Like most white sugars use charred bones to bleach it/filter it (don't eat processed food that contain sugar in them). Or certain vitamins/minerals contain animal products for their product. And what about all the animals that are killed for the sake of testing products?? Make-up and birthcontrol pills are then out too. So many products that we take for granted are made on the death of animals.
Every little bit helps to contribute to the overall peace we seek in this world.

I shunned leather, suede and fur LONG before I made the leap to being a vegetarian. Personally, all the vegetarians I know (many of whom are actually vegan)... and being a rescue volunteer, I know many... do not wear leather or fur, etc.

I think if someone is a vegetarian for the animal reasons, then there's a pretty good chance they dont' buy that stuff... however a great deal of vegetarians are not in it for the animals, but rather for health aspects or just that they don't LIKE meat... so for them... I can see where wearing leather, etc would be a non-issue.

Anyway... I'm with ya. While I'm not vegan, I wont eat/wear/use anything that causes the death of an animal. While we get a lot of flack from people... I'm sure the animals appreciate us. :)

properly, it relies upon why you're a vegetarian. in case you do it because you adore animals, and do not count on harming them, like I do, then you actually do not purchase leather-depending, fur, products examined on animals, ect. if you're a vegetarian because of wellness, or you basically don't love meat, then you actually likely nevertheless will purchase that stuff.

I agree for the most part . There is a 'by products' rule that usually older vegetarians will live by and I think many people will have had an inadvertent slip . I think they should not be going all out to buy fur and leather and then still call themselves vegetarians. I dont know if they should be called 'Flexitarians' or just 'hypocrites'.

I have never worn fur but I admit I do have some shoes that are leather. I got them before I became vegetarian and throwing them away does nobody any good in all honesty. I paid alot for said shoes because they actually do not hurt my feet (I have a very high arch)

I do not contribute to the industry anymore however.

Some are vegetarians because of health or diet reasons, but for the others I suppose it just disgusts them to put it in their mouth. I also find this ridiculous and even hypocritical.

Maybe some are just working up to that level. There are a lot of possibilities for your question. Most people start out being vegetarian by first a thought. Then they may give up beef, eventually working up to eliminating all meats. After that time, more thoughts on animals are processed, and most eventually get to the point of animal-less clothing.

I don't wear leather and fur. Congrats for being so committed! I am personally grossed out by the idea of wearing/eating something dead. Especially a harmless, helpless animal!

I am a vegetarian...and i do not wear or even touch animal skins, hides, etc. I do think it is just as bad and i dont do it. I love animals and i love the way i live.

It really depends on the person and how wrong they think it is. Some vegetarians think that the animal is already dead and that to honor it you must use all part of it that includes the skin.
I do not wear leather or fur but I do sometimes wear wool.
