I would suggest a block party outside. We do one every year. There is a chili cookoff contest where the guys make the chili and the women taste test it, there are games for kids, we set out fire pits in the street and hang out all night. It is a good time.
I agree, do it after the holidays!

Go with January. People are overloaded with holiday parties from Thanksgiving to New Years and it'll be hard getting a lot of people together in December. Check online for basic snack ideas like dips and different punches. You could also make it a potluck party and welcome your neighbors by asking them to bring their favorite dish to share with their neighbors and have a good time catching up.

A married couple is a unit, in case you will invite one to do something you quite ought to invite the two. If the spouse declines and the two she and her husband look pleased with you and the husband going out mutually then you definately would desire to evaluate doing so; even though this could be somewhat awkward exceedingly thinking the age discrepancy.

Two things I have learned .
1 have the party at a hall or banquet room
no messy house or kitchen.
2, If there is going to be alcohol. don't have a fancy dinner or fancy foods. people tend to drink too much and aren't hungry or they waste the food.
So go easy ..
Vegetable trays.. pin wheel sandwiches. chips , salsa and dips
I wouldn't be too much on the sweets ..drinkers don't like sweets then.
