you should cut as much sugar as possible. another thing is carbs, you have to watch them because when your body processes them it turns them into sugar. avoid soft drinks also. those have huge amounts of sugar in them.
basically if you exercise and watch those things you will be okay and probably lose weight as well. i lost 60 pounds after finding out i was diabetic and starting watching my food intake and left the soda alone.

First I'll say, check the inter-net WEB for diabetic diet advice. You'll get a lot of answers, but the underlying guideline is avoid processed foods as much as possible. Foods such as white sugar, white flour, fast foods, etc. Go for whole grain products, fresh fruits and vegetables, prepared by yourself, if possible. Start reading the ingredients on product labels. Avoid items with high fructose corn syrup. The best thing is to reduce your intake of fats and carbohydrates (starches & sugars). Have salads with vinegar & oil dressing rather than the store bought heavier ones. Steam your veggies, a little butter won't hurt you. Choose green beans or squash rather than white potatoes. If you eat a potato eat the skin also, etc.
It's not easy, but it's worth it to keep your blood sugar under control.
I am a diabetic. I take glucovance. I watch what I eat, but I would be better off if I exercised more.
Controlling your blood sugar will preserve your eyesight, your nervous system and vital organs.

Diabetes is the best disease to have! I mean out of many dreadful diseases. It is simple to cope with. In fact life is more livable since you got to get disciplined. What do you have to do? On three levels. Your body, mind and soul. As for body- two things. Exercise and diet. Exercise can be mild but regular. It could be a long walk or a swim what ever you like. You can even try some games which are not strenuous. Exercise must be at least for 45 minutes. Your heart beat should go up at least 25to40%. As for diet NO SUGAR. to start with you can cut it by half and regulate and taper it off. Use olive oil for cooking. Avoid fats, creams. Burgers[McDonald variety] and the like a big no no. Leafy vegetables. White of egg. brown bread. No butter or jam. You eat small quantities many times. Do not feel scared as the list gets longer. You will get used to it. In exercise there are some useful yoga postures. I will tell you later. As for mind- Just relax. Live one day at a time. Avoid conflicts, fights and altercations. Just keep off unrest and turbulence. Have good sleep. [Get up early and start your morning walks]. At the spiritual level practice to silence your mind. Can you have a few moments when you think of nothing. Practice it. Get spiritual. There is great Peace over there. You have got to explore it to experience the bliss. Please write me if you want to know more.

Follow your doctor's advice.
You should avoid sugar and Carbs. You can take complex carbs but in limited quantity under doctors supervision.
Must watch the weight and must engage in light exercises, there are cases of people recovering, just by weight loss and exercises.
Go to the site on Internet and find as much as you can, get a booklet from your doctor's office ,it may have approved site and other information.
Have yourself monitored, if it is temporary condition then it may disappear. Are you on insulin of any kind?

It should be reduced in simple carbohydrates and limited in complex carbohydrates. If you want more information about what diet should look like, then contact your diabetic health educator or the Diabetes society.
