The "dangly bit" is called the uvula and when it is inflamed and swollen, that's called uvulitis. This is not tonsillitis! Your girlfriend needs to have someone drive her to an ER now before she goes into respiratory distress. Call her now and advise her to avoid gargling or drinking. Nothing by mouth! Understand? Get her to an ER.

If rapid onset-may be allergic reaction-seek medical help urgently. If slower onset and good lady is prone to exageration-tonsilitis-go with previous advice.
Tangential thinking-maybe she is shrinking everywhere except the back of her throat!

Tonsillitis
Tonsillitis is an inflammation of the tonsils in the mouth and will often, but not necessarily, cause a sore throat and fever.
Symptoms may include pain in the tonsil area and inability to swallow and/or painful swallowing, white spots may also appear on the tonsils.

Yes. She needs to see a doctor ASAP. If it continues to swell I can cut of the air flow to her lungs and then she really will be in the hospital. If she wants til she goes is gargle with warm salt water to help the swelling.
I hope she is fine. Please urge her to the hospital
