too much oxygen, and yawning is lack thereof

to get rid of em the quickest, have him hold his breath as long as he can (within appropriate reason), and if they continue, do it again till they're gone!

The part to blame is your diaphragm . This is a dome-shaped muscle at the bottom of your chest, and all hiccups start here.

The diaphragm almost always works perfectly. When you inhale, it pulls down to help pull air into the lungs. When you exhale, it pushes up to help push air out of the lungs. But sometimes the diaphragm becomes irritated. When this happens, it pulls down in a jerky way, which makes you suck air into your throat suddenly. When the air rushing in hits your voice box, you're left with a big hiccup.

Some things that irritate the diaphragm are eating too quickly or too much, an irritation in the stomach or the throat, or feeling nervous or excited. Almost all cases of the hiccups last only a few minutes. Some cases of the hiccups can last for days or weeks, but this is very unusual, and it's usually a sign of another medical problem.

You've probably heard lots of suggestions for how to get rid of hiccups, and maybe you've even tried a few. Holding your breath and counting to 10 is one way some people can get rid of their hiccups. Other people say that drinking from the "wrong" side of a glass of water is the way to become hiccup-free.

Putting sugar under your tongue might work, too. And maybe the most famous treatment - having someone jump out and scare you when you're not expecting it - helps some people wave good-bye to their hiccups. Boo!

A hiccup is basically a spasm of the diaphram. This can be caused by eating too qucikly, eating something hot or spicy, eating things of 2 extreme tempatures at the same time, or laughing. But some more disturbing reasons can be an electrolye imbalance or in rare cases abnormalitys such as tumors pressing up against the phrenic nerve or kidney disease.

The best way to get rid of them is to just calm down and concentrate on beathing. Another way is to stimulate the vagus nerve. If you want more information on that particular remedey, look up Francis Fesmire of the University of Tennessee College of Medicine's paper entitled: "Termination of Intractable Hiccups with Digital Rectal Massage" ;)

Hiccups are the result of spasming of the diaphragm - the major muscle for breathing. Many factors can contribute to these spasms. A few examples are: 1) hiatal hernia, 2) magnesium deficiency and 3) irritation to the phrenic nerve in the neck (often a result of spinal subluxations at C3, C4 or C5).

If your son has a chronic problem with hiccups, it would be appropriate to see a Chiropractor to find and treat the cause.

Best wishes and good luck.

hick ups, they are caused when the chest muscle,s that control, your breathing, and the part of the brain responsible, for those muscle,s get out of sink, with each other, the best way I have found to get rid of them, is to take a very deep breath, and hold it for 30 seconds, and if you should hick up, while you are doing this, don,t dis-pare, take a few deep breaths, and try again, it may take, 2 or 3 trys, but I guarantee, It to work, it has for me every time.

From my understanding hiccups are caused by the diaphrame contracting to fast. The cause is usually eating to fast or to slow. My own remedy for hiccups is to eat a big spoonful of peanut butter and then quickly drink a glass of water, your body tries to process that and makes them go away. It has never failed me yet.

chronic? has he seen a doctor? it could be coming from some internal issue or a prelude to a disease.

normally hiccups are caused by tension in the diaphram or spasms due to oxygen deprevation caused by laughter... growth spurts.. eating too fast.. drinking alcohol... being stressed.

it can also be caused from heart burn, acid indigestion, GERD, ulcers...

but if he suffers them often and they're hard to stop it's time to drag him to the doc and have them give his digestive tract a looksee and his throat.

sometimes infections in the sinuses can cause hiccups that are frequent.

also allergies to foods...

also soda can cause hiccups due to the carbonation.

it is usually causes by the diapragm, when it's getting too much oxygen and very low carbon dioxide. Your diapragm will react to balance the air concentratio inside the body.
