when my son was 3 - he loved dinosaurs. So I went to the dollar store and bought those sacks of plastic dinosaurs - there were about 12 dinos for a dollar. I made cupcakes - frosted them with green frosting and put a dinosaur on each cupcake - which the kids got to keep.

I got a watermelon (it was in the summer) and spray painted it gray and green and yellow (mottled colors) - and hid it in the back yard. Then they went on a dinosaur egg hunt. Whoever found the egg had to roll it back to the finish line, and they got a prize. They loved that game - so we let them play it several times.

We hid more of the little dinosaurs in the sand box, and had a dinosaur hunt - they all got to sift through the sand for dinos.

We got those inexpensive foam visors and decorated them with big eyes and spots and gave each child one to wear - we called them dino hats. (at three they really buy into it).

Good luck with your party!

Our last party was a "messy party," meaning the kids made stuff like volcanos and gooey chalk and temporary tattoos out of kitchen supplies. An EXCELLENT resource is the book Kid Concoctions by John and Danita Thomas. The supplies were cheap, the kids loved it. Do be sure to say in the invitations that guests should wear clothes to get dirty in. Do make sure you have several adults to help you supervise. Do buy a cheap tablecloth, preferably vinyl topped, to spread on the kids' work surface. Don't be surprised if the little ones decide to spend a long time just sticking their hands in stuff, mixing it and feeling it on their fingers. Also, don't be scared if little hands turn black/blue/purple. Just use some clean baking soda, soap, and warm water to scrub the skin.

I went to a kid's party at a friend's house (who was on a budget), very simple, but a lot of fun. You can serve hotdogs (chili is optional), with potato chips. Serve punch which goes a long way. And of course, the dessert is the birthday cake. You can make simple party/loot bags with candy and party favors if you're able. But don't forget the games... Have fun.

Balloons will be good. Just go to your local party stall and get some round and long balloons. Blown them all up and decorated the house with balloons. If you want to, you can buy some long balloons and twist them into different shapes like swords and dogs. Finally you can end the party by giving each guest a balloon to bring home. Wouldn't that be nice.

Make his favorite dinner, with a few blue, red and yellow ballons. Buy him a little birthday cake and some ice cream. Then take him to the movies to watch a cute cartoon that he would like, after take him to K-B Toys (toys r us=to xpensive) and let him choose a buy one get one free toy. He would love that.

Get a bunch of bags and let them create a person on it, to make a pupit. Use cut out by moms pieces of colored construction paper, white beards, red arms etc. to make Santa and elves. Use a candy nose. The best gets a prize.

I'M SO GLAD TO SEE SOMEONE HAVE A PARTY WITHOUT BREAKING THE BANK. BOYS LIKE CARS. HAVE CAKE AND ICE CREAM, A DRINK OF JUICE, BALLOONS, FAVORS FOR THE KIDS TO TAKE HOME, SOMETHING FROM THE DOLLAR STORE, THAT COULD FIT IN A LITTLE SACK. GAMES SO THAT THEY CAN RUN OF SOME OF THEIR ENERGY IF YOU HAVE THE SPACE. YOU DIDN'T SAY HOW MANY WERE INVITED. THEY USED TO SAY HOW OLD YOU WERE TO INVITE THAT MANY. JUST ENJOY. THE KIDS WILL HAVE FUN.

Make pb&j triangles for the kids for lunch....make cupcakes instead of buying a cake (with sprinkles of course)....play musical chairs, pin the tail on the donkey, duck duck goose. Set up an area to play blocks, a painting area....a coloring area. Have them string popcorn or cranberries and hang them on your tree. Or make paper chains, those are fun for kids and it kills time.

Have fun (most of all!!!!)

Well if you wanted to have a simple party, then just get friends over for a dress up. Make up your own games and if you are really stretched for money, then you could get him and his friends to help you cook something you hhhave at home!! Every small kid loves getting his hands dirty
