I have had california rolls but never raw sushi. What does the fish taste like? I can't imagine.

OMG, sushi is so good. A lot of people think the thought of sushi is gross. I think it's just the thought of raw fish. But if you go to a good sushi restaurant, you don't even notice the fish is raw when you eat it. It's kind of hard to explain. To me, it's kind of like eating a tender piece of steak. Most of the time it just melts in your mouth. FYI, there are some rolls you can get that have cooked fish in them.
Next time you are out, I highly recommend trying it. You may like it!

To be perfectly honest with you, raw fish just tastes like FISH!! It's the texture that has the obvious difference - I'd describe it as a bit on the slimy side, but not TOO much..!!

I'd recommend that you try sushi with just small amount of raw fish. You'll barely notice it, and then you can gradually work your way up, with a bit more raw fish each time, until you find your own ideal balance.

Sushi is just short grain rice flavored with rice vinegar and topped or wrapped with any ingredients you fancy. It's not always with raw fish. There are many selections without any seafood at all, be it raw or cooked. It can be with beef, eggs, pickled vegetables, mushrooms etc.
It's sashimi that entails raw fish, seafood and meat. It is not for everyone. But sincerely, until you try it, there is no describing what you are missing in the wonderful natural flavor of fresh seafood as nature intended.

Fish.
(Sorry, I couldn't resist that!)

The taste really depends onthe type of fish and the other ingredients. For starters, ask for a mild fish. If you really like the taste of fish, try a stronger flavored fish.

Salty and with a distinct fish taste. Soy and wasabi do tend to mask the fishiness.
