My mom did a couple of Christmas parties when I was a kid. We weren't rich (for US citizens) but she spent weeks preparing for this party. She decorated the Christmas tree and living room with blue and green. Blue and green lights, blue and green table linens, blue and green... you name it, it was blue and green.
My mom made most of the food herself-- except for the sweets. She had a great bakery to go to and didn't really care about baking.
My sister and I were always allowed to come in for about ten minutes in our PJs pretty early in the evening to say hello and get a plate of party food. Then we would be shuttled back to my parents room, where we would watch TV (this is before the days of VCR/DVD/cable!). Oh, the weird movies that would be on. One year it was a movie called angel in my pocket or angel on my shoulder, about a guy named mario, and two kids are staying with him and his wife and they live in a hotel in NYC with slightly suggestive murals of the garden of eden. Another year, it was a man for all seasons, which was a little confusing even for a Catholic school child since I hadn't learned much about hist0ry at that point.
Anyhow, they had great food and lots of booze. The house was decorated in a way that was totally cool. Even now thirty years later, I think people would enjoy the way my mom had all those blue and green lights on the tree and in the windows.
So, I gues I;d say atmosphere goes a long way. Invite interestting people who don't all know each other. Have good food and lots of it. Lots to drink and if you smoke w##d, then lots of that too. Good Chirstmas music doesn;t hurt, and other good music.
Be sure to hang mistletoe.
And, I'm spent....
Have fuun, no matter what...
P.S. Karla, I want to come to your Christmas PJ party!

I think the problem with Christmas parties is that everyone is all dressed up in uncomfortable clothes, and not mingling.
I think it is fun when you can play some games that require people to move around, switch tables, mingle and most of all laugh. It is also fun to have party favors for everyone and great food.
I think it would be fun to have a Christmas Pajama Party - everyone comes in their PJ's. Serve pizza, snacks, hot cocoa, popcorn - and just have fun playing games, karoake - that kind of stuff.

Yeah, I understand what you mean when you say Christmas parties can be boring. I'd rather spend time with family and just eat, talk, laugh, open gifts, basically just having fun with your loved ones.
But the good things about Christmas parties are conversations and jokes, jolly music, and free food. Unless I'm the one hosting.

Before going to a Christmas party or any party, there are few things you should take care of. I will rather say, some precautions you should take, that will make your party much happening and enjoyable.
Usually, we attend Christmas parties just for the sake of it. If you will pay attention to your clothing, sandals, alcohol intake etc before attending parties, you will save yourself from any untoward and uncomfortable situation.

we use to play a game called scrooge. You count all the presents and then you make that many numbers..People draw out a number and #1 picks first...when #2 picks they can take away #1's gift or get another from under the tree...#3 can take what 1 or 2 has or pick one...Once it changes hands 3 times, it's frozen nobody else can take it.
