a warm air humidifier is basically a vaporizer, and a boiling pot of water simmering on the stove will do the same job much more cheaply. A humidifier, simply puts moisture in the air by spraying a fine mist. Frankly, keeping a large flat bowl of water in each room will do the same thing without burning electricty to run it. If you have a sore throat or a dry nose, the best thing you can do for it is to drink something soothing, and lots of it to hydrate yourself, and use normal saline nose spray to moisturize your nasal passages.

for a sore throat, the cool air humidifier is better, to help decrease the inflammation.

warm air humidifier is used if the airways are very dry -- this helps the lungs produce more secretions to hydrate the airways.

bloody noses? hmm... i'd go with cool air humidifier to decrease the swelling and hopefully constricts the blood vessels.

It's a preference. I cannot stand the cool air but my hubby loves it. He cannot stand the warm air, but I who am prone to sinus headaches, dry throats and allergies LOVE THE WARM AIR. It depends on what your body is used to. The moisture in the air is key, not the temp. Warm is slightly better as cold constricts things and heat expands them.
