The pilgrim fathers were short on duck to add to their menu at the earliest thanksgiving observances. Thus to make up for this absence, in their wisdom chose to call duck sauce duck sauce.

Well actually in the early 60's people used real ducks for the sauce just the same for steak sauce. The ducks or meat would be ground and put to together with other ingredients to make up the sauce. But since times have changed and ducks and steak is expensive we now use flavours to serve the purpose. And believe me this is the whole truth and nothing but the truth.BTW they also used live babies for baby oil.....hahahah just kiddin on that one lol....

Duck sauce is another name for Plum Sauce. The name "duck sauce" comes from the fact that Western Chinese restaurants began serving it with the pancakes that go with Peking Duck, under the mistaken impression that this was an authentic practice. (In China, Peking Duck is traditionally served with hoisin sauce). But whatever name it goes by, plum sauce makes an excellent dipping sauce for appetizers, such as Egg Rolls and Spring Rolls.

Maybe originally the sauce was made to use for peking duck and other duck dishes, Specially since the sweetness in the sauce goes well with meat.

It's called Duck Sauce because it is typically a sauce to be served with Duck. It's like Pizza Sauce - sauce for pizza - not made with pizza.

Duck Sauce is actually plum sauce, and it is used in Americanized Chinese food restaurants to put on a pancake served with Peking Duck. (Hence the name) In China, they always serve Peking Duck with hoisin sauce. The American Chinese food distributors who package the various sauces for take out use the name "Duck Sauce" to describe their plum sauce, which is usually eaten with egg rolls.

It is called duck sauce because it was created to be used on duck and other poultry as a basting sauce during cooking. Similarly, spaghetti sauce doesn't have spaghetti in it, but rather is intended to be put on top of spaghetti and other pasta.
