To get rid of the bitter taste in a cuke, simply peel it. All the bitter tannins are in the skin. After that, it's a matter of personal taste wether you eat it plain or put salt on it, or soak it in vinegar.

In case of most fruits and vegetables, it taste batter if you cut the stem and the other end off.
Cucumber is no exception.
But if you do not cut it off in case of cucumber,it will not harm you. So it can be eaten after good washing.
You can try any way to see what is your choice.
Some cucumber may be extremely bitter and the rubbing will not take the bitterness out, in most cases it can be eaten also, but if it is bitter I as rule discard it.
My family always use the rubbing method but did not use the salt at rubbing. Some members use the salt at the table and some did not, I prefer mine slightly salted at the table.

Cucumbers grown to be eaten fresh (called slicers) and those intended for pickling (called picklers) are similar.
The fruit is commonly harvested while still green, though generally after the fruits outgrow their spines. They are eaten as a vegetable, either raw, cooked, or made into pickled cucumbers. Although less nutritious than most fruit, the fresh cucumber is still a very good source of vitamin C, vitamin K, and potassium, and also provides some dietary fiber, vitamin A, vitamin B6, thiamin, folate, pantothenic acid, magnesium, phosphorus, potassium, copper, and manganese.
The pickling process removes or degrades much of the nutrient content, especially that of vitamin C.

Either is fine. Peeling it will help with bitterness too, the main thing is to get fresh, organic as preference. You can do the top rubbing thing without salt too. I like them cleaned on the outside and sliced, then eaten with tomatoe and extra virgin olive oil and balsamic vinegar.

cucumber ends should be cut and rubbed aginst the remaining parts to take away bitterness.then the vegetable should be washed and if the skin looks o.k. you can do without peeling. then you can slice it and sprinkle salt, pepper and a dash of lemon drops. this will make a salad by itself. or you can shred a cucumber and add it to yogurt or indian dahi, and add salt and spice and chill it . cucumber or'kheera dahi' is ready. it goes well with paranthas or indian stuffed potato pancakes.

peeled is the way to go, then salt or no salt to your taste. i don't recall ever eating a cucumber that is foaming or oozing, you might not want to eat one doing either of those.

my grandmother always told me to cut the ends and rub them with the cut off piece,u don't need salt, although when serving to eat a little salt sprinkled makes it taste better. You can also scrape the sides with a fork before slicing.it looks nice, you don't have to peel off all the skin.freshly squeezed lime on it also makes it taste good
