its called sleep apnoea ..where your breathing becomes shallow & could stop, but as your in a deep sleep your body doesnt react. this can be helped by a sleep apnoea alarm..a thin blanket under your mattress which is atatched to a machine which monitors your heart beat/breathing & if your SATS drop will alarm to tell you to wake up. you will also possibly need to go and have a sleep study at a hospital so they can see when you are in your deepest sleep during the night..and whether anything triggers sleep apnoea ie bad dreams/snoring etc..hope this helps XX

It is called Sleep Apnea. Sleep apnea may be characterized by choking sensations. The frequent interruptions of deep, restorative sleep often lead to early morning headaches and excessive daytime sleepiness.

Certain mechanical and structural problems in the airway may cause interruptions (apneic events) in breathing during sleep. In some people, apnea occurs when the throat muscles and tongue relax during sleep and partially block the opening of the airway. When the muscles of the soft palate at the base of the tongue and the uvula (the small fleshy tissue hanging from the center of the back of the throat) relax and sag, the airway becomes blocked, making breathing labored and noisy and even stopping it altogether. Sleep apnea also can occur in obese people when an excess amount of tissue in the airway causes it to be narrowed. With a narrowed airway, the person continues his or her efforts to breathe, but air cannot easily flow into or out of the nose or mouth. Unknown to the person, this results in heavy snoring, periods of no breathing, and frequent arousals (causing abrupt changes from deep sleep to light sleep).

Sleep apnea occurs in all age groups and both sexes, but is more common in men.

Insomnia: trouble falling or staying asleep; can be caused by psychological conditions (like chronic depression or temporary stress), environmental conditions (such as noise), or physiological conditions (like pain or chronic breathing disorders). Insomnia can also be caused by a change in the sleep-wake rhythm (such as shift work) or by the misuse or overuse of sleeping pills.

Sleep Apnea and Snoring: Heavy snoring can be a symptom of a serious sleep disorder called sleep apnea. People with sleep apnea stop breathing again and again during sleep. These apneic episodes may last 10 to 90 seconds and can occur hundreds of times each night.

Breathing Problems: When patients have chronic breathing problems or lung disease, their symptoms often worsen during sleep. Complete evaluation of such respiratory diseases requires measuring blood oxygenation during sleep.

The only thing I can think that you are referring to is SLEEP APNEA. This is a condition where the breathing reflex temporarily ceases.

Yes there is, it is called sleep apnea. You can get a diagnosis by having a sleep study done and if you do have sleep apnea then they can remedy it by putting you on a CPAP machine for sleeping.
