I Read an indepth report that determined it came from monkeys. It is most likely a human got it while cleaning a monkey to prepare for food. The monkeys blood containing the virus got in an open cut and that person gave HIV to someone and that person gave it to someone......etc....
Hope that helps

HIV began in monkeys. It mutated to the current human form sometime during the 70s or 80s.
There is also a cat version, FIV, that is very common nowadays. That's part of why my cat lives inside.

You need to read the book "The Hot Zone" by richard Preston. One of the best books I have ever read. It's talk about strands of viruses related to HIV and how it got into the human population. I'm telling you, READ THE BOOK! ;)

Well, it is suspected that HIV is a mutated strain of SIV (simian immunodeficiency virus - disease in monkeys). There are similar species-specific strains - ie. FIV in cats.
