Colitis is a digestive disease characterized by inflammation of the colon. Signs and symptoms of colitis includes pain, tenderness in the abdomen, fever, swelling of the colon tissue, bleeding of the surface of the colon, rectal bleeding and ulceration of the colon. To make proper diagnosis the tests include x-ray, stool culture, colonoscopy and sigmoidoscopy. Perhaps blood test.
There are several types of colitis including ulcerative colitis, Crohn's colitis, diversion colitis, infectious colitis, atypical colitis etc. Many patients suffer severe pain, diarrhea and fever. A number of the patients require surgery.
Treatment usually involves antibiotics, general anti-inflammatory medications, steroids, other drugs or surgery. Reducing carbohydrates, lactose products, soft drinks and caffeine is also beneficial.

Inflammation of the colon. The different types are described below (source, NIH):
Ulcerative Colitis: An inflammatory bowel disease that causes ulcers in the lining of the rectum and colon. The most common symptoms are abdominal pain and bloody diarrhea. Also, it appears to run in families (and since my father and a sister had it, I'm guessing it's running in mine).
Collagenous Colitis and Lymphocytic Colitis: Less severe than ulcerative colitis. Also called microscopic because there is no sign of it when viewed with a colonoscopy or flexible sigmoidoscopy, so a biopsy is necessary to make a diagnosis. Symptoms are chronic, watery, non-bloody diarrhea.
The 1st link below references ulcerative colitis, and the 2nd link is for Collagenous Colitis and Lymphocytic Colitis.

Colitis: Inflammation of the large intestine (the colon). There are many forms of colitis, including ulcerative, Crohn's, infectious, pseudomembranous, and spastic. For example, intermittent rectal bleeding, crampy abdominal pain and diarrhea can be symptoms of ulcerative colitis. Diagnosis can be made by barium enema, but direct visualization (sigmoidoscopy or colonoscopy) is the most accurate test. Long-standing ulcerative colitis increases the risk for colon cancer. Ulcerative colitis can also be associated with inflammation in joints, spine, skin, eyes, the liver and its bile ducts. Treatment of ulcerative colitis can involve medications and surgery

Colitis is a spastic colon, very irritating, very embarrassing at time. You may get a lot of gas, you know what that does. It's a pain in the ...? you know.
The polyps in the colon should be nice and smooth, they should be almost not there. Well some people, like me unfortunately, when they get into stuff like jalapeno sauce, gravies, hot sauces, to much barbeque's, etc, etc. you pay for it, for days. The polyps get irratated, they swell and give off a type of liquid, that seeps out, then the hemorrhoids start from the irritation. From one thing to the next, do you get the picture?

I'll tell you what it isn't -- a respiratory disease. Colitis is an inflammatory condition of the large bowel (intestine).
