There are lots of reasons about.

1. It was named by Victorian children after the living toads were alledged to be found encased in rock during the 1860s.

2. It is because the ends of the sausages peeking out were said to look like toads heads.

3. It is named after a pub game of disks being thrown into holes on a table.

4. In medæval times meat was in short supply. Residents in some impoverished villages, particularly those in areas such as the Carrs regions around selby, took to eating frogs and toads. They would often supplement the protein with a baked mixture of powdered grains to protect the delicate meat from the heat of the fire. Children and the poorer members of the comunity would be given the remnants of the baked grain coating and be required to extract the "toad from the hole"

When I was a little girl...a VERY long time ago...I was told that a kitchen maid was carrying a tray of sausages across the kitchen when a small child burst in screaming that they'd seen "A toad in the hole"; the kitchen maid jumped and dropped the sausages into a tray of yorkshire pudding just as it was about to be put in the oven.
They baked it to see how it would turn out as both items were ruined anyway.

When it turned out so good they served it up and called it "Toad in the Hole".

Well, that's what my Mum told ME!
