Diabetes is a disease that is often hereditary. There are some ideas out there on whether a person is fat and becomes type II diabetic, or whether because they are disposed to diabetes, they have problems maintaining a decent weight. There are two types of diabetes. One is Type I, where the pancreas does not work at all. It does not produce insulin. Insulin is what makes your cells take in food and use it for energy. If your pancreas does not make insulin, the food that you eat turns to a simple sugar in order for your body's cells to utilize it--and it goes nowhere. Your sugar levels become higher and higher because of this, and you could very well die. Type II is when your pancreas begins to stop producing as much insulin, and/or your cells become 'insulin resistant", meaning that there is insulin, but the cells will not take it in. So again, you have high blood sugars and you become sicker and sicker--drink lots of water (in an attempt to cleanse the body of the high sugars) peeing a lot (same) and often, starvingly hungry (Polyphagia) because ironically, while you are eating possibly huge amounts of food, none of the cells are getting what they need. There are other signs, such as itching feet, and your body being more difficult to heal after any sort of injury- be it a broken bone or a cut on the skin, and losing or gaining weight. If you suspect diabetes, you need to get to a doctor and have a glucose tolerance test- to see what your body's sugars are after fasting. Normal is under 150, and mine, btw, when tested was 320. EEEK!! You also need a blood test called an A1C, which is a test to see how controlled your sugars have been. 5 point something is good for a non-diabetic, 7 for a diabetic, and if its higher than that (8,10, 12) it gives an indication of how poorly the diabetes has been controlled. It gives the doc somewhat of an idea of 'the size of the monster" if that makes any sense. Link:

Most of the answers here have at least some truth in them.
Diabetes is a disease in which the body does not produce or properly use insulin. Insulin is a hormone that is needed to convert sugar, starches and other food into energy needed for daily life. The cause of diabetes continues to be a mystery, although both genetics and environmental factors such as obesity and lack of exercise appear to play roles.

Diabetes is always hereditary.

A type 1 diabetic is insulin dependant. This means this person's pancreas is no longer producing enough insulin to sustain life.

A type 2 diabetic could either be maintained on pills or insulin or both depending on their weight and their level of fitness.

It is believed that the disease lies dormant for years, until something triggers it, often a cold or flu.

They symptoms are: Excessive thirst, excessive urination, headaches, lethargy, blurred vision among others.

Testing for this is quick and simple.

Physical fitness is the key to longevity with this disease.

Food relates to exercise. Being able to control both helps control the disease.

Diabetes is a disease caused by a number of things. It can be inherited from a parent. There are two types: Diabetes Type 1 and Diabetes Type 2. Diab 1-can occur in children (juvenile diabetes) and requires a lifetime of medications to control. This is the most difficult to control. Diab 2-is adult onset usualy caused by obesity and can be diet controlled. A person with Type 2 can control their blood sugars usually by diet and exercise and taking off the weight. Sometimes a person is not compliant with this regimen and must go on oral medication or insulin injections to control it. Diabetes is present when the pancreas cannot produce enough insulin to control the processing of the food we take in. Some of the causes can be obesity, dysfunctional pancreas, diseased pancreas, tumor on the pancreas or even cancer of pancreas, to name a few. It doesn't just go away, even if you stay on the prescribed diet. It is managed by your treatment regimen. Diabetes destroys cells of major organs in the body i.e., brain, heart, kidneys, etc. It causes blindness, poor circulation, amputation of limbs and early onset of dementia.

Diabetes can be caused by a virus. It is also caused when the person is overweight. The pancress is not producing the correct levels of insulin. Which it puts your body into a shock state. It is very important to control being a diabetic with diet and medication. Otherwise a person will have difficultly with the body healing when injured or sick as well as death can result if not taken care of. I have seen many people take care of their diabetes very well. Others that do not care have lost legs and even arms because of the infections and poor circulation. If diagnosed then please take care of your self. Get lots of education and you can have a great, long, healthy life.

ther are 2 types of diabetes I believe ,one is type 1 and one is type2 .the first one can be controled by your diet and the second one is when your body has to much sugar and it cannot get rid of it naturally so you have to take shots and be on a strict diet .Diabetes is usually heritary and you should watch your diet and exersice.Being overweight ,and I think not eating healthy can cause it .But thats just my opinion. My nephew ate poptarts and nothing else it seemed when he was little and he got it real young. But Im sure you can look it up on the internet to get more specific facts.

You don't get it from eating sugary food, You get diabetes when your pancreas cannot produce enough insulin to handle the sugar.
You consume, which include things like fruits, and carbohydrates which turn in to sugar in the body

type one is something you are born with a tendency for because your family has it in its genes, type 2 you can also have a tendency for but you dont have to get it as long as you keep your weight in the normal range, diabetes is an inability for your pancreas to put out enough insulin for your body to deal with the sugar in your blood stream. sugar is created by eating sugars, carbohydrates and drinking juices, sodas with sugar, and alcohol.
