a matzo: It's a wheat flour and water dough, rolled out cracker thin and baked until crisp. But you're nuts if you do this yourself. Plural: matzos.
As for matzo meal: Ever seen bread crumbs? Same idea. Again, Manischewitz is a good brand. If you are stuck with a box of matzos and no matzo meal, just go crazy with a heavy object on a piece of matzo. (It helps to place the matzo in a plastic bag first...) Of course, you can also use a food processor.

Hi flygram, Matzo meal is made from plain flour. Matzo meal and water are mixed together to make an unleavened 'bread' which is eaten by jewish people at times of passover and I'm sure other holy days when they are not allowed to eat leavened bread (bread that has risen) It does not look like bread as we normally would think of it but more like very thin cracker. Depends what do you mean by matzo meal. Different groups of Jews have different ways to prepare it. Kids here in Israel eat it with nutella or marmalade, just as a sandwich. Yemenite Jews make fatood. You boil milk with salt and special home prepared butter. You smoke the wood (grape wood) and let the smoke mix with butter, it is called sachne. Of course you put a lot of butter in the milk. When it is boiling, you put in the milk crushed matzot, so that it is well soaked and cook for about 20-30 minutes. Fatood looks 'dry', but not too dry, it must remain wet a bit.

It's made of matzo meal which is a cracker mix made up out of ingredients similar to bread dough but without yeast.

the crackers and meal have no leavening............nothing to make it rise like bread.
and that's in the Old Testament of the Bible....the Jewish people had to leave...and there was no time to have the bread rise....
