I struggled with this for a long time when becoming a vegetarian. I took me five years after giving up meat to finally give up fish. I called myself a fishetarian when I was eating fish. I have been fish free for over five years and am now an a lacto ovo vegetarian. I agree with some of the other answers. If the goal of vegetarianism is to preserve and protect life, fish count as animals. I hope you are considering vegetarianism. You will look at animals in a new way once you make the choice. Good luck.

Technically a "vegetarian" who eats fish is a pescitarian. Not all vegetarians are vegetarian for animal rights. Some for health reasons, and that may be why some eat fish.

You don't know a lot of vegetarians who eat fish.
You know a lot of meateaters who restrict thier diet to fish and then for some misguided reason call themselves veggies.
Please tell them to stop lieing to themselves and others.
A veggie is:
A vegetarian is someone living on a diet of grains, pulses, nuts, seeds, vegetables and fruits with or without the use of dairy products and eggs (preferably free-range).
A vegetarian does not eat any meat, poultry, game, fish, shellfish or crustacea, or slaughter by-products such as gelatine or animal fats.
This definition comes from the veggie society, recognised as the World authority on veggie issues.
There is no CREDIBLE source or authority that says veggies eat fish.
There is no such thing as a real vegetarian, a demi, semi, true or total vegetarian. You are either veggie, or not. Fish eaters are not.
Is an animal ever semi or demi..dead ? no
10 out of 10 for drawing out so many stupid answers from people.

A real vegetarian wouldn't eat fish. The vegetarian society defines a vegetarian as
A vegetarian is someone living on a diet of grains, pulses, nuts, seeds, vegetables and fruits with or without the use of dairy products and eggs (preferably free-range).
A vegetarian does not eat any meat, poultry, game, fish, shellfish or crustacea, or slaughter by-products such as gelatine or animal fats.

No, if people are eating fish; then they are not vegetarians. Being vegetarian means you do not eat any sort of flesh from any animal, fish or shell fish.

No, not if you are striclty vegetarian. There are quite a few people who are vegetarian and eat fish but fish is still an animal with friends and family just like a cow, a dog, or a monkey. So don't eat them! Or a bat. Or hamster. Or an ant.

NO NO NO NO NOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!! People who eat fish aren't vegetarians.
And the new concept floated further up the answers about a "pollo-vegetarian", ie a vegetarian who'll eat chicken, turkey or duck, is ABSOLUTELY RIDICULOUS!
It's no wonder we suffer in restaurants when ideas like this are out there perpetuating the idea that as long as it wasn't a cow, a pig or a sheep, then it's OK for a vegetarian to eat.
BAH!

Apparently, someone who eats fish but not meat are called demi- vegetarians. Mind you, if you told some waiter/ waitress that, they would probably look dumb at you! I disagree with fish dishes being called vegetarian, as I have been offered fish dishes, and if you are a real veggie, you don't eat fish.
