Small frequent meals - like 6 per day. Limit carb intake. No more than 50 grams per day, no more than 10 grams at one time. (Carbs break down into sugar, so you need to treat them like sugar and severely limit both) Get in the habit of reading labels, both for portion size and nutritional content. Pay attention to the fiber content. Fiber is good for all of us and those are carbs you won't metabolize, so you can let the carb content slide a bit if there's a high fiber content. Remember that any ingredient ending in "ose" is sugar.
Fruit has a lot of natural sugar (fructose) and some vegetables are high carb (like corn and peas), so there are a lot of things you'll need to educate yourself about. You can purchase books that give you the carbohydrate counts for pretty much every food.
I'm hypoglycemic - I produce too much insulin instead of too little. Despite that difference, the management is quite similar. If I go more than 4 hrs without eating I feel lousy, both physically and mentally/emotionally. I found that other people can't tell you how things will affect your body. You need to pay attention to how you feel after you eat or drink certain things and act accordingly. For instance, I can't drink anything with sugar in it (including when the sugar is natural rather than added, like orange juice), but can get away with some sweets or high carb foods.
There's a lot to learn. You may not notice the difference immediately, but as you learn how to do this you will feel better. Look for books about managing diabetes. Your doctor may be able to recommend one or two. Good Luck!

If diabetic, you should be well advised by dietician, diabetic nurse and specialist. Follow the advised diet and keep checking your blood sugar levels as per your regime. If they are high, do a little exercise, take insulin if prescribed in this way BUT ONLY AS PRESCRIBED. Exercise should bring it down. If it is too low, then do the opposite. Rest a bit until it is back to normal. Raise the level by drinking a glass of milk or 7up or a digestive biscuit. If you are feeling very poorly, call a doctor.

Eat small meals (or regular meals with snacks in between) that are low in carbs. Try to eat a little something every couple of hours, and keep a candy bar, box of juice, or other source of quick sugar handy at all times, and if you ever feel yourself getting dizzy and weak, eat/drink it. Learn to listen to your body - it will tell you when your blood sugar is getting low if you pay attention to it.
Basic healthy food - with lots of fiber, and not too much sugar or white flour - will generally keep you on a fairly even keel.
If you've been diagnosed with diabetes, your doctor should be able to get you in touch with a nutritionist who can give you more details. If you're just trying to keep yourself from developing it or if you're pre-diabetic, try going to the library and getting any one of a number of cookbooks and information guides. You can also go to http://www.diabetes.org/home.jsp and find out a lot.
