I've been informed by the oldies that bathing a child more than once and afternoon time is bad for kids. Thay say it weakens the lungs and kids easily get sick like colds and cough because of bathing them that way. I need scientific explanations with this. my kid's pedia says has nothing to do with bathing but the oldies still goes with theirs. What's actually causing them weak?

don't know what you mean by oldies, I have been taking baths since I was a baby myself, over 30 years ago, and I don't get sick easily I breath just fine and other than the fact that I have a slight cough from smoking for almost 20 years which I have just recently quit I am perfectly healthy, actually you know what? if you are reffering to oldies meaning elders or older people, I'd take the advice and suggestions of a doctor who has a college education, steam from a hot bath can actually help with breathing problems

no it does not! i believe they are old wives' tales.

it is important though that you keep a warm environment and the water should be warm enough for the baby. (not boiling hot!). the reason why they say this is that because when an infant is in a colder environment, they breathe less effectively. but it is only for the period of time that they are exposed to a colder environment, it's not permanent. it's a defense mechanism that their bodies do. but it does NOT cause any permanent pulmonary problems.

so keep the water warm, bring in a humidifier and/or heater inside the bathroom, and give the baby a fairly quick bath. just enough to clean him/her up nicely. he/she doesn't have to stay in the baby tub and play for long periods of time.

i know what you mean when "oldies" give you weird advices such as these. my relatives are like that too. they believe that sweat can make you sick blah...blah...blah... it comes with lack of education (in my relatives' case) to tell you the truth. they may have heard from a "good source" but they are not capable enough to interpret it. you should hear the ridiculous theories my grandmother would tell me. i used to believe them when i was younger. as i grew older, i became more knowledgeable -- and i found my grandmother's theories to be preposterous.

it is good to respect the elders, but they are not right all the time. i just nod along and pretend i believed them so they wouldn't be offended. but if it's something that has to do with your health -- your best bet is to see a doctor.

Well Chrys: Here's a note for you, sometimes the "Oldies" have something with their ideas and sometimes they don't, This is one of the "dont's" it has nothing to do with baths or washing etc. Why do you ask this? It seems like you have something to say or ask about it? no questions?
