A lot "Mexican" foods in the United States are unheard of in Mexico. For example, my in-laws in Mexico do not know what a burrito is. Other menu items such as "chalupas" and "chimichangas" are not really Mexican either.
Mexican foods I know of include Pozole, chilaquiles, tostadas, soups with chicken or pork, cucumber with lime and salt, potatoes with sour cream, eggs/beans/sour cream and rice eaten with some kind of salsa and of course tortillas...basically anything can be eaten with tortillas (little tortillas - not at all like the MASSIVE ones like they have at Chipotle).
