I've lived in the San Diego area for a couple of years, I even had tacos in some shop down in TJ, don't remember. I hit alot of taco shops in the area and nothing compared to Taco Bell. Del Taco came pretty close with their big fat chicken tacos and mexican style crinklecut fries, but still, Taco Bell is by far my most favorite mexican cusuine.

It is what it is.
I'll say that Taco Bell is the only Mexican food drive-thru that I can eat while I'm driving without making a big mess.
I don't mean that it's better or worse than "real" Mexican food; it's just a different type of food.

In no way, shape, or form is Taco Bell REAL Mexican food. It is just a franchised imitaiton of the real thing. In Chicago there are tons of places that have real Mexican food as I am pretty sure there are where you live. Travel to your local Mexican neighborhood and experience what they have to offer; you have to try out a couple because the each will have a specialty. But, I'm positive you will never see Taco Bell the same again once you have some REAL Mexican food!!!!

Are you kidding me? That's like asking if ramen noodles are authentic Italian cuisine. Just because the word "taco" is in the name does NOT mean there's anything authentic about it.
Authentic mexican food seldom even uses cheese, and if it does, it's the crumbly kind called "queso blanco."
Real mexican rice is sauteed in butter and garlic and spices and then steamed for a long time, it's the fluffiest yummiest stuff out there.
Tamales are the closest thing I've found to heaven yet.
And until you've tried flan, you haven't lived.

No. I actually saw a poster in a Taco Bell that said "Mexican inspired". Even they don't think it's real Mexican food.

I dunno, is the McDonald's cheeseburger "real" American food?
Taco Bell is as close to authentic Mexican food as "wieners" are to authentic Austrian food or "chop suey" is to authentic Chinese or a "teryaki burger" is to authentic Japanese.
If you visit Mexico, in 85% of the country they will not even recognize or accept a Taco Bell taco as an "authentic" taco, they will call it a "tostada." In the vast majority of Mexico a taco comes ONLY on a SOFT tortilla, NOT a hard toasted one!
That is not to say the Tex-Mex style of food is not good, it is! It is just a very limited version of "Mexican food," and not even very accepted or even known in the vast majority of Mexico......

No way. When I want real Mexican food, I eat at home.
Not that Taco Bell doesn't have its own "charm", let say. I crave it sometimes.

No. There are authentic Mexican restaurants out there, but realize that Mexican cuisine varies regionally much like Chinese.
And to answer your next question: I'm pretty sure Outback Steakhouse doesn't serve real Australian food.
