I'm not 13, but a very close family friend was 13 when he found out that he was diabetic. I know he had a really hard time when he first found out because he loved candy and cakes. You can still enjoy some sweets, but just in moderation. I have Type II diabetes, and I made a chocolate cake with whole wheat flour and used Splenda (Splenda also sells a brown sugar substitute now) and the cake turned out really good. I have found that with Splenda, even though it is supposed to measure the same as real sugar, I have to use a little bit more in recipes...about an extra 1/2 cup. Look for online support groups. I'm sure yahoo groups has something for you. Good luck, and remember to take care of yourself.

you are not alone. There are lots but of all diabetics only 10 % are type 1 so finding someone your age is hard. If you live in/near a big city there may be suport groups or something like that. You can check with the local diabetes educator.
