so that may seem stupid, but I HATE my inhaler, and I was given trials of singulair that worked amazingly, but of course insurance won't pay. So now I'm supposed to use an inhaler twice a day, and my fast acting inhaler when i work out...but why? when I do have an attack, I can eventually start to breathe normally on my own, even a really bad one. I might wheeze for a couple of days, or cough for awhile but it goes away. Is this dangerous? Am I causing damage? just curious, cause I really don't want to use a new inhaler, and most likely won't.

** just to add, my asthma isn't that bad. i've never been to the hospital, never blacked out, mostly just coughing fits and tight chest.

My son asked his doctor the same question so I'll tell you what the Dr explained to him (keep in mind he was 8 at the time). ** When you breath air into your lungs and there is something in the air that doesn't agree with the little trees inside the lung your lungs will swell to prevent entry. That is what makes it hard for you to breath. You use your inhaler to help settle the little trees or to protect them so your lungs will open and allow air to enter. If you don't use your inhaler then you will not be able to get enough oxygen in your body which is used in your blood & brain (lack of O2 to the brain is what caused you to black out or get dizzy) to survive successfully. If you don't allow enough in your system then your breathing will get harder & you will then need to come into the hospital to be put on a machine to help reduce the swelling in your lungs untill your body has enough O2 again. ** If your inhaler doesn't help much or at all inquire about an inhaler called Pulmicort. You will take it once daily and it helps the inhaler to work better. Since my son (now 14) started using it he hasn't had an episode bad enough to go to the hospital. But since he knows when he has an increased chances of an episode he begins using it prior to the allergy season that effects him... Asthma isn't fun and I'm glad I only have one child that has the problem.

Asthma is nothing to mess around with. People have died from Asthma attacks. It is best to listen to your doctor. My sister is 42, and she still has attacks that send her to the ER...even with using her inhaler.
