My husband smokes and here lately, I have been worried about him. He has this persistent cough that sounds as if it hurts but when I ask him about it he either tells me that he is okay or makes a little snide remark about how I am overacting. He knows that I hate him smoking and that my Grandfather had lung cancer and emphysima. He also has two children that really need him and I am just scared that this cough could be something more serious. Can anyone out there help me?

I know how hard this is for you my father has been a long time smoker and its rough i know your husbands cough very well i hear it in my dad. All you can really do is explain why it upsets you and why you want him to quit. tell him that ur afraid that he's gonna end up like ur father ask him if he wants to be around to see his children grow up and to see his grandchildren. I have a son and i worry about my dad not being around too long to see him grow up either. He's tried to quit smoking but it doesn't seem to stick to long.
I've heard that hypnotizing works great to quit smoking and if he's a gum chewer u could always try that nicorette. But honestly i'd saying letting him know how seriously this is to his family is gonna work the best. G/L

The commit lozenges (I like them better than the gum or patches) are working for me. Buy him a box, much cheaper at Costco or Sams, and ask if he would give them a try. I plan on using these for a long time as they don't have any where near the risks of smoking and they give me my nicotine fix.

There is a denial with most people that they can and will die. Yours is in some sort of denial. Sometimes a health scare does it.

DO you or he kids have asthma? Then you hubby contributes to it and may be killing you.

Maybe you can provide a health scare by leaving the non smoking material arounf the house.

there are two answers ... one violent and one non violent

place a shock collar around him so everytime he smokes he gets about 200 volts in his body .... that doesnt really help because he may die from the shock

theres the non violent way where u learn his daily schedule how much he smokes when he buys his smokes and then you just throw away his smokes ... or just get him banned from every liquor store possible

wait till he gets to the ICU (intensive care unit) for smoking and then that will be the time he will realize that he needs to stop smoking. just tell him to get ready for the bills for the hospital. once he pays it, he will realize that he should stop since he does not want to pay that huge crazy amount again. and i dont mind him smoking as long as he doesnt exhale.

Unfortunately, you can't make him quit. He has to want to quit and do it for himself. It's like any other drug or alcohol problems, it's an addiction - Hounding him about it will only make him angry and make excuses.

Maybe he should have a physical so the doctor can tell him what it's doing to his body.

if the words "lung cancer" doesn't help, tell him that smoking causes male sexual impotence. It's not a joke! good luck!

contact the lung association and get some info on quitting for him. there are now patches, pills, gum, hypnotist, cessation groups, as well as (I think) a shot.

He just has to keep trying to quit.
