i'm asking this for my husband, he's 28 years old, seems to be in fairly ok health, but at a routine physical he was told that his BP is 150 over 100, the doctor then did an EKG which came back abnormal, they plan to do another next week, in the mean time is there anything that we can do to try and naturally lower his BP??? he does have a family history of heart disease and high BP, we just thought that he was to young to have to worry about it yet

The first line of treatment of HBP is a conservative treatment. Which means proper diet balance, exercising, lowering your weight, control of stress and lifestyle advisory and make some tests. After a period of time considered by your physician there is going to be a reevaluation. If your husband can maintain the BP in a normal or borderline range, than he would continue without medications but with periodical examination.
If the BP cannot be controlled by this measures, then it will be necessary to administrate a proper treatment which varies on the background conditions (presence or absence of high blood cholesterol, diabetes, kidneys disease, etc.)
Most patients with high blood pressure can develop a normal life with a single medication, but having follow up periodically.

I agree, with the answer above. Less salt. Also, make sure that he arrives in time for the appt, if he is rushing around at the last minute and dreading the appt, it will cause the B/P to go up. As far as natural remedies, cinnamon, parsley, and the vitamin coenzyme Q10, are small simple measures you can take. Also, is he overweight? Just loosing 10 pounds can make a difference. How is his cholesterol level? Also can you learn to take his B/P at home (not on those inaccurate machines at walmart)? He may have a little bit of "white coat syndrome", and be nervous thinking about what the doctor is going to do. New studys are coming out now, that say 1000mg of calcium/day may lower B/P. This article sounds like a good one for you to read. Even though it is from a vitamin company, I find them to be VERY reliable. http://www.naturemade.com/wellnesstopics/wt_articles.asp?articleid=50 . You can also look at other vitamins and herbs for hypertension. Get him to discuss simple remedies for b/p with his doctor before getting put on a medication. Lifestyle changes are hard to make, but it is better in the long run. All medications have side effects, and he is very young to start b/p meds.

Get enough sleep.Cut out sodium, eat lots of fresh fruits and veggies(the best ones are bananas, citrus fruits, potatoes, sweet potatoes, carrots, peas, garlic and tomatoes)-all of these contain a lot of potassium, which helps to lower blood pressure.Whole grains are good as well.Smart Start healthy heart cereal is formulated to reduce blood pressure. If he smokes,he needs to stop. Also he could try a calcium-magnesium supplement. Both help to lower blood pressure.Try to walk a little each day,and cut down on stress if possible.COq10 and hawthorn are also good for the heart and blood pressure,as is fish oil.Good luck.

Decrease the stress around him, take days off, and remove salt and caffeine from his diet. If he smokes he will need to quit with the assistance of his doctor. It is possible he will have a surgical procedure so don't give him any natural remedies from the health food store. His system needs to be clear for the anesthetic. Best of luck to all of you!
