The recommended heart rate for a heart at rest should be between 60 and 100 beats per minute. Higher or lower can be a possible problem. A heart rate for a healthy individual that is doing aerobic exercise is normally higher than 100. This is called a target rate and will depend on the person's age, health and type of exercise. On the other hand, runners, especially long distance runners, may have a heart rate below 60.

Recommended Heart Rate
It’s important to monitor your heart rate during your workout to be certain that your exercise program is both safe and effective. To get started, find your pulse at your wrist or neck after you've been active for approximately 10 minutes. Count your pulse for 15 seconds and multiply by 4 to determine the number of times your heart beats per minute.
Next, use this formula to determine your maximum heart rate:
220 - your age = maximum heart rate
For example, if you are 60 years old, your maximum heart rate is:
220 – 60 = 160
Although the recommendations do vary, the American Heart Association suggests that you keep your heart rate at 50 – 75% of your maximum heart rate while exercising, in order to get the most benefit. These percentages will vary depending on the individual, so check with your provider to determine what percentage of maximum heart rate is best for you.
Using the AHA percentages as a guideline, simply multiply your maximum heart rate by .50 and .75 in order to determine your target heart rate while exercising. Continuing our previous example, we would multiply 160 by .50 to determine the low end of the range: 160 x .50 = 80
To determine the upper limit of the range, we would multiply 160 by .75: 160 x .75 = 120
To complete our example, the goal of a 60-year-old exerciser, then, would be to maintain a target heart rate of 80-120 beats per minute (bpm) throughout the workout.
If you fall within your target heart rate range, continue exercising at your current pace. If you're below it, increase the intensity of your activity. If you're above it, decrease the intensity of your workout.
