many are born with this condition, some worse than others. usually the hole just closes up with time and is no big deal, but sometimes infants undergo surgery to close it up. By the time you are adult, the hole has closed. If one develops during adulthood, or was never treated, it can get large and cause all sorts of nasty things to happen, including death.

From what I know they are born with it. May be an accident can couse a hole there but then I would assume that would be fatal like a stab in the heart

it is congenital - you are born with it. It can be in the ventricles or the atria of the heart and is repaired by straight forward heart surgery. I have never heard of anyone developing it in later life.

most are born with it. it's called a septal defect and can be either ventricular or atrial.
however, a ventricular septal rupture may develop after an acute myocardial infarction (heart attack) in adult life. so the answer to your question is yes.
