Some of the people answering this are confusing a CT scan with a MRI scan.
CT = computerized tomography.
It is a 3-D xray of your tissues, in your case your brain. This looks at the bones and vessels in your head. It is not noisy. It is simply a ring that you pass back and forth through while you lay on a bed.
They may or may not have you drink some contrast material before they start. If you have to drink it, it isn't very nice but it is drinkable.
There are no bad effects from the CT itself.
If the doctors 'see' something that concerns them on the CT then they may send you for the more sophisticated MRI.

A CT scan is something like an x-ray. You lay on a table that moves into this big machine and it takes 3D pics. of your brain to show what's going on with your veins , arteries any growths, clots, etc. It's very noisy, they gave me head phones to put on and listen to music while the test was being done. If your claustrophobic you won't like it and might need something like a Valium before hand.

It is easy! I just had one yesterday as a matter of fact...for the first time. And its not claustrophobic- that is the MRI machine. This machine is very open- a round top goes over you- and you just lay there still...yesterday the machine actually talked me through what I needed to do- it would say "Breathe slowly" so I would then it would say "ok now dont swallow" so I didnt, and that only lasted 10 seconds. Did they say if you had to have iodine in you? I had to...but it was nothing. The only horrible part about it is the LONG WAIT in the waiting room!!
