why not just cough it up and spit it on the floor

Sure, by a process called suctioning. This is usually only done on people who cannot cough on their own, such as comatose or intubated patients. It is done by inserting a tube about the size of a straw, down through the mouth or nose and into the bronchi. A port on the end of the tube is occluded which applies suction pressure while the tube is slowly pulled out. I doubt you would want to have this done, most patients absolutely hate it!!

yes that can be done but you don't want that done not pleasant at all. the doctor can give you meds to break up the stuff. as well a
respiratory therapist might help you with a kind of pounding on your chest and back

No, even people who have MS who have excessive phlegm have to just cough it up.

If you find out will you let me know? I'd love to have my "snot gland" removed! I've got a miserable cold, and I'm so tired - and sore - of blowing my nose I'm about ready to just hang a bucket under my nose! (sniff)...
