Red lake 40 is an artificial food color. There is a red coloring that is made from beetles, cochineal. that is natural. The web sites listed in the answers are good sites for more information. Some people are allergic to these dyes and ADHD has been linked to them. My dog was allergic to them too. She lost her hair till we purchased dog food without red dye. We try to avoid all food coloring, but the natural ones are okay.

I was at the Pacific Science Center in Seattle when they had an exhibit on bugs in food. It's disgusting the number of everyday items that contain bugs (in one form or another). Snapple was in the display (probably for the coloring they use), as were various candies and snacks. There were some other drinks too... but it's been so long ago now that I dont remember which ones. Of course all that was just side dishes to the "main course" which had stuff like sauteed grasshoppers over noodles, etc. It was quite gross. :)

PS... not to mention... even if a product doesn't HAVE bugs in it... USDA "allows" a certain level of "contamination" in almost all food - and the allowed level is alarmingly high. ie. as long as there's only a FEW roaches that fell into that stew pot.. its' okay to sell. GAK!

Cochineal in UK, (is that red lake 40 in USA?) used to be made from the cochineal beetle, thats how it got its name, but that stopped about 30 years ago when people found out about it and now they use some other kind of dye stuff.
