There are several specimens that can be used to detect an HIV infection. They are blood, oral fluid (OMT) and urine. The most common collection methods utilize blood and oral fluid.

Despite what others here have answered, HIV tests utilizing a urine specimen do exist. You cannot detect HIV in a stool sample.

Hope this helps.
