Yes you can if the cold sore is in the active stage. Herpes is contagious so anyone with a cold sore should not engage in oral sex without using a condom or dental dam. You should also not share food, drinking glasses nor kiss her on the lips when she has a cold sore.

Absolutely, it is one of the most common ways that people contract genital herpes.
Oral cold sores are caused by the herpes virus. Most people have oral herpes and most get it through non-sexual means, usually as children when their family is affectionate with them. The herpes virus is passed by sore to skin contact, especially when sores come into contact with mucous membranes (genitals, mouth/lips and eyes). When sores are present there is a high liklihood that the virus will be passed. When sores are not present the virus can still be passed but the chances are very low. When someone has an oral cold sore they should never perform oral sex on someone, the chances of giving the recipient genital herpes is so very high--just to risky.
If you are concerned that you may have contracted herpes you should be examined as soon as possible. It is important that you are seen when you still have sores. There is no way to test for herpes unless you have sores present.

These are all great answers, and I'm glad you're getting help, but that person up above is pissing me off. Herpes does NOT turn in to AIDS. HIV can lead to AIDS. The abundance of misinformation on this site is all ready through the roof. Please, vote this person down, they've done a great disservice and this young man could have been even more panicked because of it.

yes cold sores can advance to gentital herpes. if you have never had a cold sore (90% of the adult US population has had one at least once) do not kiss your significant other or share anything orally until ithad cleared up. applying blistex or abreva before bed will help it to clear up faster.

good luck-

Yes. There are two types of Herpes Virus; HSV I and HSV II. HSV I is typically found on the lips (cold sore) and HSV II is known as Genital Herpes.

It is possible to get HSV I on your genitals and HSV II on your lips. If you do get an HSV I infection on your genitals your chances of recurring outbreaks are less and they are typically less servere then if you have an HSV II infection.

Hope this helps.
