Emphysema is not an infection and is not transmitted. It is a failure of the alveoli in the lungs such that transpiration of oxygen and carbon dioxide is impaired, and the only important cause is inhalation of smoke, especially tobacco smoke.

Emphysema is chronic obstructive lung disease due to various causes. There is damage to the alveoli and oxygenation is impaired.

Emphysema is not a communicable or transmittable disease. It is a chronic lung disease caused by smoking. It is no way contagious.
