My roommate snores louder than the average person talks during the day. What can I do about this, if anything? I thought about bringing in a humidifier to soften the air a bit. Any other ideas? I can't exactly just come out and say "Dude, stfu." ya know? So any suggestions would be appreciated.

Breathe Right strips (goes over the nose) may help. NyQuil, or another anithistimine, may open up the nasal passage. If he is large, then weight loss will definitely help.

There are also noise cancelling machines (about $100 to $400) that you could put in your room that should eliminate the noise.

Sounds like you're going to have to say something. My husband and I are both big snorers. We've tried the breathe right and while I'm sure they work, I tend to take mine off in my sleep. There is a gargle out there now that I've used with some success. Can't remember the brand but it's called Snore No More (or something along those lines), you can find it by the breathe right stuff in the store.

I heard that breathe right strips help, but short of forcing him to have surgery, there's nothing more you can do. When he sleeps, those muscles that keep his airway completely open relax, causing a tightening of the airway. The force of air through that narrow passageway causes the "snoring" sound you hear, and the only thing that can clear the airway is surgery. So, why not buy some ear plugs? They make really comfortable ones nowadays.

I've been dealing with this with my husband for years. Sounds like a freight train in our room at night. We tried the breathe-right nose strips, and they didn't work. Tried throat sprays, etc. They lessened the volume of the snoring, but the snoring didn't stop.

If you want you and your roommate to be friends, suggest some snoring-stopping strips and tell him where to find them (target, CVS, wal-mart). If you just want to have some college-pranking fun, duct tape his mouth and post the picture on facebook.
